An Analytical Study of the Methodology and Characteristics of Al-Lubaab Fi Uloom al-Kitaab

Abstract

The Quran is a unique and divine revelation, bestowed by Allah to Prophet Muhammadﷺ. The Prophet himself was the first interpreter of the Quran, as Allah commanded him not only to receive the revelation but also to explain its teachings to the people. Following the Prophet, the companions (Sahaba) undertook this mission of learning and disseminating the Quranic knowledge. The subsequent generation, known as the Tabie'en, continued this noble task effectively, forming a continued chain of Quranic scholarship. This ongoing tradition gave rise to an extensive body of knowledge on the interpretation of the Quran. Among the noteworthy works is "Al-Lubaab fi Uloom al Kitab" by Ibn Adin Hanbali, a significant book primarily focusing on the exegesis of the Quran and its related sciences. This important book, "Al-Lubaab," has a unique way of interpreting the Quran. It uses Tafseer bil Mathur, which means explaining the Quran using other Quranic verses and also interpretation by Hadith, statements of the Sahaba, and Tabie'en. The author, also discusses the context of revelation (Shan e Nuzool), grammatical details concerning Sarf and Nahv, fiqhi discussions, and addresses misinterpretations done by other people regarding tafseer. Al-Lubaab is a comprehensive, standing out as a rich source of knowledge about the Quran. It connects different sources of Islamic knowledge, making it valuable. The book encourages further exploration and research, making it a guide for a deeper understanding of the Quran Additionally, there is much need for further scholarly research on "Al-Lubaab fi Uloom al Kitab." This would enable a more profound exploration of the knowledge pertaining to Quranic exegesis.
